Gerd Müller passed away on Sunday at the age of 75, Bayern Munich reported. The legendary former striker and club icon of Bayern had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for some time. Müller won the 1974 World Cup with West Germany by scoring in the final against the Netherlands. The former striker is Bayern’s all-time top scorer with 566 goals in 607 official games.

Müller was active as a forward from 1963 to 1981 and was known as Der Bomber. The former striker set an unprecedented average for West Germany by scoring 68 times in 62 international matches. It earned him the European Championship title in 1972 and World Cup win in 1974. He also had great successes with Bayern Munich. He became champion of Germany four times and he won the national cup four times. By winning the European Cup 1 three times in a row from 1974, Müller finally established the name in world top football with Bayern.

Oliver Kahn, former goalkeeper and board member of Bayern Munich, reacts sadly to Müller’s death. “The news touches us all deeply,” Kahn said. “Gerd is one of the greatest legends in the history of Bayern, his achievements are unparalleled to this day and will forever be part of the great history of FC Bayern and the whole of German football. As a player and as a person, Gerd stands Muller like no other for Bayern and his development into one of the greatest clubs in the world. Gerd will always be in our hearts.”

Bayern chairman Herbert Hainer is also deeply saddened by the death of the former striker. “Today is a sad, black day for Bayern and all his fans. Gerd Müller was the best striker there has ever been and a fine person, a personality in world football. We are united in deep sorrow with his wife Uschi and his family Without Gerd Müller, Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever.”
