With the extinguishing of the Olympic flame, the long summer of sports has come to an end. However, the fanatic sports viewer does not have to end up in a black hole, because the Eredivisie has finally started again. Is Ajax still supreme or has Roger Schmidt of PSV managed to build a championship team? Or has Feyenoord found renewed energy to attack the top? And who will be the successors of Giorgos Giakoumakis and Lucas Woudenberg?

Last season Ajax was already champion three games before the end and despite the fact that no player has left the basic team for the time being, the team was put back on earth last weekend by the 0-4 defeat against PSV in the Johan Cruijff Scale. Although Ajax is still the favorite at TOTO with a odds of 1.41, PSV may become a serious challenger this season. The team from Eindhoven has already won five matches this season and has won them all. The last time PSV started the season with so many consecutive wins was in 2014/15. In addition, the team was very accurate with fifteen goals in these five games.

But perhaps the renewed Feyenoord under Arne Slot will show that it can participate in the battle for the championship scale. Feyenoord still had trouble with FC Drita in the first official match, but already showed a lot more conviction against FC Luzern. In recent history, Feyenoord started in good spirits under a new trainer, so the last six games under a debuting coach were not lost (five wins, one draw). Slot does start against a fear gegner because as a trainer he has not yet won a single Eredivisie game against Willem II (one draw, one loss). If Feyenoord really have ambitions to finish at the top, it’s better to win, because of the previous 64 champions, 51 started the competition with a victory.

Another vacancy that needs to be filled is that of top scorer. With the relegation of VVV-Venlo, Giorgos Giakoumakis has disappeared from the Eredivisie for the time being. Also the number two with the most goals last season, Donyell Malen, will not be seen on the Dutch fields after his transfer to Borussia Dortmund. A logical consequence would be that the players behind that are favorites to score the most goals this season. However, it remains to be seen where Steven Berghuis and Danilo, who last year accounted for eighteen and seventeen goals respectively, stand in the hierarchy at their current club Ajax. For example, they were both allowed to take penalties at their club last season: Berghuis shot eight for Feyenoord and Danilo five for FC Twente. Ajax, on the other hand, has no reason to change permanent penalty taker next season, because Dusan Tadic was accurate with all seven attempts from the spot last season. Does that make him a favorite for the 2021/22 Willy van der Kuijlen trophy?
