Ajax has received a new offer from Stade Rennes for Edson Álvarez, so assured The Telegraph. The ambitious French club now has twenty million euros left for the 23-year-old Mexican. Ajax could also look forward to a resale percentage. It is still unclear whether the Amsterdammers are interested in selling Álvarez. Director of football affairs Marc Overmars stated on July 28 that the midfielder is not for sale.

Made in mid-July The Telegraph first report of a bid from Stade Rennes for Álvarez. According to the newspaper, the French then wanted to pay eighteen million euros, an offer that was brushed aside by Ajax. Overmars denied the offer at the end of July in talks with Football International. Mike Verweij from The Telegraph however, persisted in reporting and dismissed Overmars’ statements as part of the negotiations, hoping to secure a better deal for Álvarez.

“We have not received a concrete offer, but I do believe that Stade Rennes is seriously interested,” said Overmars on July 28. “We can be very clear about that: at the moment a departure from him is a no go. He has since become an important player. So he can’t leave us.” Álvarez played with Mexico in the Gold Cup this summer, but has already joined Ajax. The defensive midfielder remained on the reserve bench for the entire match in the Johan Cruijff Scale against PSV (0-4 loss). .

The Telegraph do not rule out that Overmars has changed his mind after the new offer for the Mexican. The director of Ajax previously stated that he wanted to bring in about fifty million euros during the current transfer period, but for the time being ‘only’ has been sold to players for 31 million euros. Álvarez is the only Ajax player for whom there is currently concrete interest. Razvan Marin (ten million euros), Lassina Traoré (ten million euros), Noa Lang (six million euros) and Kjell Scherpen (five million euros) were sold. Marin and Lang were first rented out for a year and finally sold on 1 July through a mandatory option to buy, which is why they count for this season.
