Feyenoord Transfermarkt came on Sunday evening with the message that Azarkan had chosen Excelsior over NAC Breda and Roda JC Kerkrade, who also wanted to hire him. “Marouan is a talented player who needs to make many minutes”, technical director Frank Arnesen explains on the Feyenoord website. “The opportunities for him at Feyenoord are limited this year, so it’s good that he can work at Excelsior. We have had good experiences with youth players who have been loaned out there and have come back stronger, so we are confident that this will also be the case for Marouan.”
Azarkan has been part of Feyenoord’s youth academy since 2012. In September 2019, the wing attacker made his debut in the main squad, by coming in as a substitute against ADO Den Haag. A year later he played his second official game for Feyenoord, but he didn’t get any further for the time being. He spent the past six months on a rental basis at NAC Breda, for whom he played eleven official matches. Azarkan was not in Arne Slot’s plans, as he was not part of the selection in the Conference League games.
