Steven Berghuis will play at Ajax with shirt number 23 on the shirt. The attacker who came over from Feyenoord mentions in conversation with Inside Ajax the fact that Michael Jordan and LeBron James wore the same number as motivation. Berghuis also knows in whose footsteps he is following at Ajax with number 23.
“I hesitated for a long time between 11 and 23. But 11 was more a number for a left winger. In the end I chose 23. Michael Jordan and LeBron James also had that number”, explains Berghuis with a reference to the two basketball players. “I find that very inspiring people. They are people who go for their goals, so that’s why this song fits this one challenge (going to Ajax, ed.). I look forward to showing great things with this song.”
Berghuis is asked if he can name a number of predecessors. “Lassina Traoré and Rafael van der Vaart are easy. I also know about Kenny Tete, because we played together at the the Dutch squad,” the 29-year-old attacker replies. Danny Hoesen also preceded him and Berghuis can still remember a highlight of his time at Ajax. Danny Hoesen also wore the number when he scored against Barcelona. I watch a lot of football and especially the Champions League matches of Dutch clubs. I remember that match well. Danny then scored just like Thulani Serero.”
“I hope to show good things with the team”, Berghuis formulates his objective for next season. “The club has big ambitions and I have them myself, so that comes together nicely. That’s what you’re looking for: experiencing success with your team. That spirit is really there, I’ve noticed since I’ve been here. The guys are hungry for success and so am I. With this jersey number and this team spirit I hope to make something beautiful out of it.”
