Joshua Kimmich stands for a contract extension with Bayern Munich. The defensive midfielder is currently in a contract for another two years, but can sign up until the summer of 2026. From a financial point of view, Kimmich will go there. BILD well ahead: his salary would be increased from approximately ten million euros to approximately twenty million euros per season. This makes him one of the highest paid players in the reigning champion of Germany.
Bayern sees 26-year-old Kimmich as a future captain and the club management wants him to experience his golden years as a footballer in Munich, opting for a long-term contract. With his new contract, Kimmich will be in the same salary segment as Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané. The only player to score significantly more is Robert Lewandowski. Bayern is also in talks with Leon Goretzka and Kingsley Coman about a new contract and they could also earn more with a contract extension.
What is striking about Kimmich’s contract extension is that he has not been represented by an agent. The 59-time international of Germany has conducted the negotiations himself and only wants to hire a lawyer to go through the final contract again. In April, Kimmich broke with his management. “It’s a conscious decision I made last year,” he said at the time. “I’ve decided that I want to stand up for my own values and that I want to take responsibility for myself.”
Kimmich, not yet back from vacation after his European Championship participation with Germany, is an undisputed base player at Bayern. In the 2019-20 season, he didn’t even miss a minute in the Bundesliga; last season he played in 27 of the 34 games due to injuries. Since he came over from RB Leipzig for seven million euros in the summer of 2015, he has played 173 league matches. Last season he was used as a defensive midfielder, but Kimmich can also play as an (offensive) right back and played in that position at the European Championship.
