PSV has learned more about the route to the main tournament of the Champions League. Roger Schmidt’s team was linked to the winner of the match between Spartak Moscow and Benfica during the draw in Nyon for the play-offs on Monday. In the third preliminary round, PSV must first get rid of FC Midtjylland.

With the victory over Galatasaray in the second preliminary round, PSV is already certain of qualifying for the group stage of the Europa League. However, the people of Eindhoven want to enter the Champions League and will play the first of two games against Midtjylland on Tuesday. In the last preliminary round, PSV could be matched with the winner of KRC Genk – Shakhtar Donetsk and the winner of Spartak Moscow – Benfica.

With Benfica, PSV would probably meet the toughest opponent possible in the draw. The club finished second in Portugal last season behind FC Porto and will face the Spartak Moscow of Quincy Promes for the first time. The Muscovites finished second behind Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Russian competition. The games in the play-off round will be played on August 17-18 and August 24-25.
