A heavy downer for sc Heerenveen and Pawel Bochniewicz in the run-up to the start of the new season. The 25-year-old defender dropped out in the exhibition game against PEC Zwolle (2-2) with a knee injury and appears to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament. With that, the season seems to end early for Bochniewicz, as a rehabilitation period of nine months is required for such an injury.
It went wrong for Bochniewicz when he got involved in a duel with Eliano Reijnders after twenty minutes against PEC. The center defender went to the ground groaning in pain and was taken off on a stretcher not much later. Heerenveen announced through official channels on Monday that Bochniewicz tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The absence of Bochniewicz is a great loss for Heerenveen, as he was a permanent force in defense last year. The Pole made 31 games in the Eredivisie last season, of which 30 times as a basic player.
Bochniewicz was attracted to Heerenveen last summer as a replacement for Sven Botman who left for Lille OSC. The Polish mandekker was admitted to Reggina’s youth academy at a young age. At the Italian club, Bochniewicz earned a transfer to Udinese, but he never managed to break through in the main squad. Since 2018, he played for Górnik, which took him over after a rental period. He also played twice for the Polish national team.
