Stade Rennes has not in the least put the arrival of Edson Álvarez out of his mind, Mike Verweij assures in the podcast Kick off by The Telegraph. Ajax rejected an earlier offer of eighteen million euros for the 23-year-old Mexican, but Stade Rennes does not stop there. Álvarez himself, however, also doubts a transfer to the ambitious French club.

“Stade Rennes will not let go of Edson Álvarez,” says Verweij. “Their problem, however, is that Álvarez plays at Ajax, which is a really huge club in Mexico. Stade Rennes is not, so his Mexican agent is not so keen on a switch yet. But they do realize that Stade Rennes likes him so much.” His salary can almost be doubled there and he can also take ten percent of his possible transfer fee, so he can cash in a lot.”

The French competition does appeal to Álvarez, Verweij knows. “What also plays into the management of Álvarez is that it is increasingly difficult to make the step from the Netherlands to the European top. In France there are of course more examples of players who make the step to the European top from there. Sven Botman plays for one year at Lille OSC and the English top is right behind him. International scouts only watch the top matches in the Netherlands, because the resistance in the Eredivisie is incredibly low. In France, the scouts from the biggest competitions are in the stands every week. Álvarez are very interesting.”

Valentine Driessen already reported to The the Dutch Summer that Ajax wants to go to Steven Bergwijn of Tottenham Hotspur with the money that Álvarez would bring in. Verweij repeats his colleague’s reports. “Bergwijn is a very serious option, Ajax wants him very much. They have tried to hire him, but the Spurs do not want to cooperate. So 25 million euros will have to be on the table. After Álvarez’s departure, the commissioners will might agree that Ajax will put that amount on the table for Bergwijn,” Verweij concludes.
