Sven van Beek admits that leaving Feyenoord hurt him. The central defender, who was loaned out to WIllem II last season, was told not so long ago that the Rotterdam club would not offer him a new contract. Van Beek, on the other hand, looks to the future with optimism, now that the mandekker in sc Heerenveen has quickly found a new club.

“I think I could still have been of value to Feyenoord,” Van Beek sighed in an extensive interview with the General Newspaper. “It’s a shame it turned out this way. Looking at the interest there was in the past from AS Monaco, I would rather have left in a different way.” The acquisition of Heerenveen was able to transfer to Monaco in January 2019 for eight million euros. Because of his dramatic performance in the away game against AZ, the Ligue 1 club put interest on the back burner at the time.

From now on, however, the focus is fully on his adventure at Heerenveen, which Van Beek officially presented as a summer asset this Monday. “Of course, as a sportsman you strive for the highest attainable, so of course you want to play at the top. But I am sincerely very happy with my chance at SC Heerenveen. This is a club with a lot of potential.” Van Beek is especially looking forward to the derby with the newly promoted SC Cambuur. “Yes, matches with a lot of pressure are the most beautiful to play. I’m looking forward to it, really.”

Van Beek hopes to remain injury-free for a longer period of time in Friesland, which he hardly managed during his period at Feyenoord. “Do I consider myself unlucky? No, I won’t use those kinds of terms anytime soon,” he answers to his own question. “I’ve had a hard time, yes. Always in the gym, having to fight back again and again. That hurts. At a certain moment I really thought: ‘What am I doing all this for?’ There have really been moments when I was like: ‘I’m going to stop.’ Fortunately, I always had people around me who kept me away from that,” says Van Beek.
