Contract negotiations between Liverpool and Jordan Henderson are not going well, it is known The Athletic to be revealed on Monday. Both parties have been discussing an extension of the contract until mid-2023 for weeks, but for now an agreement is further away than ever. The English media are seriously taking into account that 31-year-old Henderson, who has been linked to Liverpool since 2011, is leaving early, even though manager Jurgen Klopp is desperate to keep him.

However, the approach of both Liverpool and Henderson remains to continue the collaboration. The Reds want to avoid a Georginio Wijnaldum scenario at all costs, or so it sounds. The 2020 champion thought last year that extending the the Dutch international’s contract would only be a matter of time. A new contract, however, never materialized and the disappointed Wijnaldum eventually decided to exchange Liverpool for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

The Athletic refers to negotiations with Henderson about a “complicated and sensitive situation.” For the midfielder it is not about money, but about the feeling of being considered important. The impasse between club and player would even cause a lot of dissatisfaction behind the scenes. The Daily Express can report that PSG is closely following the situation around Henderson. Trainer Mauricio Pochettino is charmed by the experienced midfielder, who has played almost 400 games in the Liverpool shirt. He would also feel something for a renewed collaboration with Luis Suarez, who has been active for Atlético Madrid since last year.

According to the Daily Express Liverpool technical director Michael Edwards has bigger priorities on his list than extending Henderson’s contract, which could explain the tense negotiations. Renewing the contracts of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino is reportedly preferred, while increasing efforts are also being made to promote the promotion of youth players. The Brazilians Alisson and Fabinho will soon sign a new contract if everything goes well.
