Mike Verweij expects Steven Bergwijn to come back into the picture at Ajax now that the transfer of Kamaldeen Sulemana has been canceled. On Thursday evening, the journalist announced that the Amsterdammers themselves have pulled the plug from the deal with the left winger of FC Nordsjaelland, so that a new name will be sought. The day after the unveiling, Bergwijn is discussed in the podcast as a potential alternative Kick-Off from The Telegraph.

The transfer of Sulemana may have been rejected, but according to Verweij that does not mean that Ajax is ceasing the search for an attacking reinforcement. “Do I want to say something to the listeners? Well, this is interesting”, opens Verweij. “There was consultation today, because Ajax has drawn up a shadow list in case Sulemana would not go ahead. I’m not sure what names are on it. But it is very logical that Steven Bergwijn will come back into the picture.”

“The disadvantage for Ajax around Steven Bergwijn is that he has been running like a charm under the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur since the preparation,” continues Verweij. “The Spurs are not ready to let him go yet. But he can play on the left, on the right as well as on ‘number ten’. You can really go in all directions with him,” concludes the journalist. Insured at the end of June Daily Mail even though Ajax has not given up hope of Bergwijn’s arrival. The team from Amsterdam looked at the possibility of taking over the 23-year-old attacker from Tottenham Hotspur next summer. Tottenham are reportedly asking for £27 million, or more than €31 million.

Rumors about Ajax’s interest in Bergwijn are not new. Already when the twelve-time international came out for PSV The Telegraph frequently about alleged Amsterdam interest, although Ajax never made an offer as far as we know. In May, Verweij also expressed the expectation that Overmars will try to get rid of Bergwijn this summer. At the time, Verweij was thinking of an asking price of 25 million euros, while Ajax would not want to go further than 15 million euros.
