Due to the impending departure of Denzel Dumfries, trainer Roger Schmidt has to appoint a new captain at PSV. Marco van Ginkel seems to be a serious option for the German coach. The midfielder already wore the captain’s armband against PAOK Saloniki (1-0) on Wednesday evening and he thinks he has the qualities to take over from Dumfries. Van GInkel was already the winner in the 2017/18 season captain from PSV.

“Are you going to take that band off?”, asks ESPNpresenter Milan van Dongen to Van Ginkel after the press conference. The midfielder then answers with a smile on his face. “No idea, we’ll see.” Van Dongen then states that Van Ginkel is ‘one of the designated leaders’ within the PSV selection. “Yes, you could. I mean, you already have some experience at this club and also just in your career. I also think I’m one of those players who have the qualities to lead a team.”

“Not necessarily to be captain, but also to be busy with the young guys. To create something and to achieve something. I think if everyone wants that we can do a lot and achieve something beautiful this year “, adds the ambitious Van Ginkel. The 28-year-old midfielder then shifts the focus to the exhibition game with PAOK. He clearly enjoyed the presence of 20,000 supporters in the Philips Stadium.

“It was fun, yes. It was a long time ago. In the beginning I had a bit of goosebumps again. Then you really feel like a bit of a footballer again. We missed that, I think.” Van Ginkel now focuses on the diptych with Galatasaray in the second preliminary round of the Champions League. Next Wednesday is the first meeting with the Turkish top club. “That is very important for the club, it is a dream for everyone to play the Champions League. The route to the main tournament is difficult and long, but we are ready.”
