Lionel Messi has been officially without a club since the night from Wednesday to Thursday after his contract with Barcelona expired. It was the reason for Íbis Sport Club to make a hilarious contract proposal to the 34-year-old attacker via Twitter. However, the Brazilian club, which is in the Guinness Book of Records as the worst in the world, does set six conditions for the arrival of Messi.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Íbis went without a win for three years and 11 months, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the worst club in the world. The Brazilian club is very proud of this dubious title and when a number of matches were suddenly won in 2017, protests broke out among the fans. “Stop winning, you are destroying our history,” was the message to the players. Íbis plays in the so-called Campeonato Pernambucano, the lower regions of Brazilian football.

With the necessary self-mockery, Íbis has now made Messi a contract proposal via Twitter. The Argentine can sign a 15-year contract with the Brazilian club, at a salary that depends on his performance. Messi is not allowed to score too many in the service of Íbis. If he does, his contract will be terminated. The same will happen when Messi makes Íbis champion.

There is no shirt with the number 10 ready for Messi in Recife. That jersey number is forever linked to Mauro Shampoo, a club icon who scored only once in ten years and now works as a hairdresser. Finally, Messi has to say out loud three times that Pele was better than Diego Maradona. “It’s official,” Íbis wrote on Twitter. “The contract with Barcelona has ended and tomorrow Messi will have a new club.”

Barcelona and Messi are still in talks, but contrary to previous reports there is no agreement yet. Barcelona are convinced that Messi will extend his contract at the Camp Nou, although it is still unclear when the deal will be finalized. That could take weeks, as Messi and the Argentina national team participate in the Copa América in Brazil. The final is scheduled for July 11. Goal reports that Messi is calm under his contract situation and that he wants to focus fully on the tournament in hopes of winning his first major trophy with the national team.
