Björn Kuipers has been awarded his third matches at the European Championship by UEFA. The arbiter must manage the game between the Czech Republic and Denmark on Saturday evening. The quarterfinals will be played at the Baku Olympic Stadium. After two group matches, it is the first time that Kuipers will take action in the knockout phase this European Championship.

As usual, Kuipers is assisted by his permanent assistants Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra. Fourth official is Russian Sergei Karasev. Pol van Boekel has been appointed as video referee, Kevin Blom as assistant video referee. Earlier this tournament, Kuipers was in charge of the Slovakia – Spain (0-5) match in Seville and he led Denmark – Belgium (1-2) in the right direction. He was also fourth official for England – Croatia (1-0) at Wembley, where Danny Makkelie was in charge.

“Opportunities increase for Kuipers and Makkelie after a drastic decision from UEFA”

Kuipers received compliments for his performance in the game between Denmark and Belgium. He stopped the game in the tenth minute to pay tribute to Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest in the game against Finland. The winner of the match between the Czech Republic and Denmark will face the winner of the match between Ukraine and England in the semi-finals.

As the European Championship progresses, a number of umpires will be thanked for services rendered and sent home, based on two arguments: the level the arbiters achieve during the European Championship and whether the countries they represent are still in the tournament. It is the first time that two Dutch referees are active at a European Championship. For Makkelie it is also the first time that he whistles at the continental tournament.
