The British government is prepared to admit 60,000 spectators to Wembley during the semi-final and final of the European Championship. Previously, that maximum was 40,000 spectators. The government feels the hot breath in the neck, as the disappointing corona figures in Great Britain have cast doubt on whether the European Championship matches in London will continue. UEFA has meanwhile entered into consultations with the British government to find a suitable solution.

22,000 spectators are always welcome at Wembley during the group matches. England play all three group matches at the national stadium, which usually seats up to 90,000 spectators. Those last figures will not be achieved this European Championship. After the group stage, the capacity would be increased to 40,000 visitors, while the semi-final and final should therefore provide 60,000 fans. The British government thus increases capacity by seventy-five percent compared to the situation before.

Due to the emergence of the Delta variant of the coronavirus and the associated increase in the number of infections, questions are being raised about Wembley as the home port for the last matches of the European Championship. The UK is currently under a 10-day quarantine requirement for people wishing to travel to the country. This corona measure was supposed to expire on June 21, but the British government has postponed the end date of this restriction due to the currently un hopeful corona figures.

Hungary, where the current corona situation appears to be a lot better than in Great Britain, is considered a serious option for UEFA, if Wembley is definitively cancelled. Despite everything, UEFA remains hopeful for football supporters who want to attend the games in London next month. “There is always an emergency plan ready, but we are nevertheless confident that the last week of the European Championship will be completed in London,” said a spokesman for the European Football Association. The semifinals are scheduled for 6 and 7 July, the final is scheduled for 11 July.
