PSV knows its opponent in the second preliminary round of the Champions League. The vice champion of the Netherlands will cross swords with Galatasaray, the draw in Nyon revealed on Wednesday afternoon. PSV must survive three preliminary rounds to qualify for the group stage of the billion-dollar ball. The first match will be played in Eindhoven on 20 or 21 July; the return follows a week later.

PSV had seeded status in the ‘competition route’ of the draw, as did Celtic and Sparta Prague. The unseeded teams were Rapid Wien, Galatasaray and FC Midtjylland. The draw showed that Sparta Prague will play against Rapid Wien and Celtic against Midtjylland. Unlike last season, the preliminary rounds will again be played over two matches, although there are still no away supporters welcome until the group stage. If PSV survives the second preliminary round, it is unseeded in the third preliminary round. PSV can play against Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica, AS Monaco and Racing Genk. The draw for that round will be made on July 19, so before the diptych in the second preliminary round.

If PSV loses in the second preliminary round, it will fall back to the third preliminary round of the Europa League. If there is also a loss in this, PSV will enter the last preliminary round of the Conference League. PSV was last represented in the group stage of the Champions League in the 2018/19 season. For the time being, they are still busy with the composition of the selection before the European adventure begins: PSV must fear a return of goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo to RB Leipzig and is working on the arrival of Marco van Ginkel and Davy Pröpper.
