Stefan de Vrij had trouble sleeping after seeing his Internazionale teammate Christian Eriksen collapse during the European Championship match between Denmark and Finland on Saturday evening. De Vrij said during a press moment on Tuesday afternoon that he was very shocked by the situation. “I was watching with goosebumps. It was dead quiet for ten minutes,” said the the Dutch international.

National coach Frank de Boer already announced on Sunday before the game against Ukraine that the impact of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest was great on the the Dutch selection. The game discussion was therefore moved from Saturday-evening to Sunday-morning. The incident also hit hard at De Vrij. “I was very shocked. I was on the phone with him recently. He is really a very good boy and then it is very scary. Fortunately, we found out pretty quickly that he is doing well under the circumstances.”

Eriksen quickly announced in the Internazionale group app that he was doing well under the circumstances. Tuesday morning, the Dane posted a photo on social media, where he wrote that he was doing well. “That looked good and that’s nice to see,” said De Vrij, who has not yet spoken to Eriksen personally. “I sent him an app, but logically no response yet.”

Daley Blind said on Sunday after the 3-2 victory over Ukraine that he was hesitant to play due to Eriksen’s cardiac arrest. De Vrij himself did not have any doubts about this, although it did keep him busy. “I had trouble sleeping, you think about it all the time. You’re still with him with your thoughts. It was therefore a different preparation than other times.”
