At FC Twente and Sparta Rotterdam they will probably have frowned a few times when it became known that Halil Dervisoglu was part of the final European Championship selection of Turkey. The former Eredivisionist will take on Italy during the opening match of the European Championship with his native country on Friday evening and can at least count on the support of Mesut Özil. The star player of Fenerbahçe suspects that Dervisoglu could surprise this European Championship, having included him in his EURO 2020 Fantasy squad.

EURO 2020 Fantasy Football is a game developed by UEFA in which participants create their own dream team with a predetermined budget. On the basis of the chosen players, an attempt must then be made to collect as many points as possible by scoring goals or delivering an assist. Participants will initially receive one hundred million euros at their disposal, an amount that increases as the tournament progresses. Ozil has also put together his favorite team for the European Championship, which surprisingly includes a starting spot for Dervisoglu.

The former striker of Sparta and Twente has been posted by Ozil in midfield with Englishman Phil Foden, German Leroy Sané and Czech Tomáš Soucek next to him. Ozil has also made a spot in his team for Karim Benzema, Alvaro Morata, Cristiano Ronaldo and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Dervisoglu is joined in the team by compatriots Altay Bayindir and Irfan Kahveci. However, the goalkeeper and midfielder of Fenerbahçe have to settle for a place on the reserve bench in the German’s team. Because Özil has Turkish and German nationality, he also had the opportunity to represent Turkey. However, he chose to link his international career to Germany.

Dervisoglu went through the youth academy of Sparta, where he was picked up by England’s Brentford in January last year. Six months later, the Turkish striker was leased to Twente for a year. It was not a success, however, as Ron Jans rarely appealed to the Turk. Dervisoglu decided to return to Brentford six months ahead of schedule, who loaned him to Galatasaray for the past six months. At the end of May, Dervisoglu made his debut for the Turkish national team against Azerbaijan. He was immediately accurate on a pass from Feyenoord player Orkun Kökçu.
