Bruno Lage is the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Premier League club announced on Wednesday. The 45-year-old coach from Portugal succeeds Nuno Espírito Santo, who recently announced his departure from Molineux. Lage was the trainer of Benfica between January 2019 and June 2020 and under his leadership the Portuguese league title was won in 2019. After a series of disappointing results, he resigned from the superpower last year.

Lage was at the heart of the development of João Félix, Rúben Dias and Carlos Vinicius at Benfica, who later won top transfers to Atlético Madrid, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Lage is also already busy with purchases for the Wolves. Trincão would be on his list, although Ronald Koeman must first give the Portuguese attacker permission to leave Barcelona. In addition, José Sá of Olympiacos is in the picture as a possible successor to Rui Patrício, who can count on serious interest from AS Roma.

“I am very happy with this appointment, this is a great opportunity for me,” said Lage on the Wolverhampton website. “I am happy to return to England as a manager.” Nuno’s successor was previously associated with Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City as assistant manager under Carlos Carvalhal. “This is a club that wants to make history in the Premier League. I am therefore very happy and my ambition is to achieve great things at this club.”
