Teun Koopmeiners is on his way to Atalanta, the newspapers in Italy confirm. according to Tuttosport and Il Giorno the number three of the past Serie A season is almost complete with AZ about a transfer fee for the midfielder. The transfer would involve an amount of approximately eighteen million euros, after AZ according to Tuttosport rejected an initial offer of sixteen million euros.

AZ reportedly initially stuck to an asking price of twenty million euros, but the actual transfer fee is slightly lower. Koopmeiners himself has a contract for four seasons, at an annual salary of 2.5 million euros. Koopmeiners was not the only Dutchman who was seen by Atalanta as a potential reinforcement for the midfield. Joey Veerman from sc Heerenveen and Jerdy Schouten from Bologna were also in the picture, but the club decided to focus entirely on the AZ captain.

Koopmeiners was linked with AS Roma last month, but now surprisingly seems to be on his way to another Serie A club. Technical director Max Huiberts said to last week Football International even that a departure of the midfielder was not close. “I heard Teun say on TV that conversations with a foreign club were going in the right direction. But I really don’t know which club he is talking about. They have not reported to me yet. And there are really three parties for a transfer These guys don’t just leave AZ just like that, they know very well what they want.”

The 23-year-old Koopmeiners is part of the European Championship selection of the Dutch. He stayed on the bench for 90 minutes last week in the exhibition games against Scotland (2-2) and Georgia (3-0 win). His contract in Alkmaar runs for another two years. At Atalanta, Koopmeiners would play together with Marten de Roon and Hans Hateboer, whom he knows from the Dutch national team. Sam Lammers is also under contract with the club, which will be represented in the group stage of the Champions League next season, while the German Robin Gosens has a football history in the Netherlands.
