Memphis Depay is ready for the European Championship, the the Dutch international announced on Sunday evening after the 3-0 victory over Georgia. The attack leader of the Dutch national team scored for the second international match in a row and was also directly involved in the other two goals. According to Depay, the team of national coach Frank de Boer in the Grolsch Veste has shown that everyone is ready for the European Championship. “I think we have shown that we are ambitious,” said Depay.

According to Depay, the the Dutch squad can be satisfied with the game against Georgia. “Apart from a few points, of course,” he told the NOS. The attacker believes that the Netherlands appeared better than against Scotland. “You notice that you are playing a second game, that we could train a bit more on details and that the execution might be better.” About his own game: “I am very efficient at the moment and I try to keep that,” said the attacker who is the first the Dutch international since Robin van Persie (2013) to score four consecutive goals on behalf of the the Dutch. “I had a few sloppy moments in the second half, when I lost the ball. You are looking for even more goals and assists. If I can get those moments out, my level will go up even further. I’m happy with my goals, assist and form.”

Depay was at the basis of Wout Weghorst’s 2-0 with an assist. “We talked about this goal in training,” Depay revealed. “Exactly what we had in mind, we succeeded today. I’m happy for him, he cried well inside. And then I think he cried too, haha!” said Depay, referring to Weghorst’s emotional reaction to his first goal for the the Dutch squad. “Wout and I have more contact outside of football. I’m proud of him and I hope he can keep going. You can see that he has the whole of the Netherlands behind him. So he has to show it. There is a lot of competition, the players who come in show it too.”

Just like against Scotland, De Boer opted for a 5-3-2 system and already revealed that there is a chance that he will also opt for that method of play against Ukraine next Sunday. Depay already announced after the draw against Scotland that it is not his favorite system and repeated that message in conversation with Arno Vermeulen on Sunday. “I have always indicated: I prefer to be central in the striker. And I keep saying that. Despite that, I adapt to the systems that are best for the team. I am open to that, the team comes first. But striker is my preference and it will remain that way.” Asked about the goal of the the Dutch squad at the European Championship, Depay said: “The goal is to win the championship. But the goal is also to win the first game. And then again, and then again. We are focused on the first game, that’s it.”

Hans Kraay junior was impressed by Depay. ‘s analyst ESPN commented after the game that the attacker was ‘bursting with confidence’. “But I don’t think it entails any kind of pedanticism. Self-confidence can also lead to self-overestimation. I don’t have that feeling at all. People often think he’s a weird guy, but I don’t have that at all. I think he’s a nice, extravagant boy. He is himself, he just has it. Maybe he’s even better when he plays with a player who has depth,” said Kraay junior.
