Some remarkably long prison sentences were handed out in Turkey on Friday. A former police chief and media mogul Hidayet Karaca has been sentenced to 1406 and 2170 years in prison, respectively. The pair have been convicted of involvement in plotting against Fenerbahçe in 2011. At the time, the top club was accused of match fixing, which even resulted in exclusion from European football.

The then chairman Aziz Yildirim disappeared in the cell because of the whole thing. Ten years later, however, the picture is very different. The Turkish court mentions a conspiracy against the former president and believes that the very long sentences are necessary. In addition to Karaca and the unnamed police chief, former police chiefs Nazmi Ardiç (1973 years), Ahmet Calendar (588 years) and Lokman Yanik (162 years) have been sentenced to very long prison terms.

It AP reports that some supporters of cleric Fethullah Gülen have allegedly infiltrated the public prosecutor’s office in Turkey, in order to set up the conspiracy against Fenerbahçe. The exact reason for this has never been revealed. Yildirim emphasized in 2011 that the allegations of match fixing were untrue. Gülen himself has been living in the United States for some time. He is seen by the government in Turkey as an enemy. President Recep Erdogan accused him of planning a coup in 2016.

In a statement issued Friday, Fenerbahçe’s leadership spoke of a “historic day” in club history. “Our supporters have become a real unity, on the day that the people who conspired against us were sentenced to thousands of years in prison. After a fierce struggle of ten years, Fenerbahçe proves that it has not been destroyed,” said the board of the Turkish top club. .
