De Graafschap is making serious efforts to get Klaas-Jan Huntelaar back, chairman Martin Mos revealed in an interview with the Gelderlander. The club from the Kitchen Champion Division hopes to be able to talk to the 37-year-old striker in the short term. Huntelaar was told on Thursday by the management of Schalke 04 that his expiring contract will not be extended.

“There will be a meeting with Klaas-Jan one of these days”, Mos confirms on Friday. “We would love it if he came to play football with us again. In the first division, with attacking football, you cannot get a better striker. But we can find anything, the ball is of course with Klaas-Jan. Maybe he is tired of playing football, but at least he is willing to talk to us. That is nice,” said the hopeful president of The Super Farmers. Huntelaar went through the youth academy of De Graafschap and was briefly leased by PSV to the club from Doetinchem in 2003.

“We would love it if Klaas-Jan would still play football with us and then also be able to do something with the youth and technically”, adds Mos. “I hope he wants to do it, because I have been a Huntelaar fan for years. And you can tell from our supporters that they would love it if he played another season at De Vijverberg.” Huntelaar himself has not yet responded to a possible return to De Graafschap. according to Football International The supporters have already organized a number of actions to indicate that the striker is most welcome.

His first period as a player for De Graafschap was not a resounding success. Huntelaar did not score once in nine games in the 2002/03 season as a mercenary. The team of then trainer Peter Bosz was also relegated from the Eredivisie at the time. A season later, Huntelaar made his big breakthrough at AGOVV with 26 goals.
