Thomas Tuchel has extended his contract with Chelsea for two years, the London club announced on Friday through its official channels. The German coach was initially given an eighteen-month contract, with the caveat that this would be extended if he seizes the Champions League. With that, Chelsea keeps their word and Tuchel is now stuck until mid-2024.

Tuchel managed to win the Champions League with Chelsea last weekend at the expense of Manchester City (1-0) by a goal from Kai Havertz. “I can’t imagine a better time for a contract extension,” Tuchel said. “I am grateful for the experience and very happy to be part of the Chelsea family. There is much more to come and we look forward to the next steps with ambition and great anticipation.” Tuchel and Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League last season. He took over from the fired Frank Lampard in January.

“It was crucial to get Chelsea back to the top four in the Premier League,” said director Marina Granovskaia of Tuchel’s renewed contract. “We are also very happy with the success in the Champions League. It is a great culmination of a great season for Chelsea. We are therefore very pleased that we can keep Thomas for another two years and look forward to more performances in the coming seasons .”
