Perr Schuurs reached the semi-finals of the European Under-21 Championship in Budapest on Monday evening with the Dutch Juniors. A late goal by Myron Boadu sent title favorite Young France home. After winning the Eredivisie and TOTO KNVB Cup with Ajax, the European title with the Dutch Juniors now also beckons for Schuurs. “If that happens, it will be an almost perfect season for me,” said the defender.

Schuurs impressed against Young France. Together with Lille OSC defender Sven Botman, he formed the central duo in the team of trainer Erwin van de Looi. “I think it was a very strong match from me. I had a lot of important moments, especially defensively. It’s just nice for me to be able to show that,” says Schuurs to 1Limburg, one day before the semi-final against Young Germany.

The Ajax defender who lost his starting spot to Jurrien Timber last season received many compliments afterwards. “I received apps and messages from family and friends, but also from trainer Erik ten Hag, director Edwin van der Sar and Davy Klaassen called me. That remains fun, especially if it is positive,” says Schuurs, who hopes for the European Championships. “There are now four teams left in the semi-finals that are very close together. It comes down to who wants the most and has the most discipline to play smart.”

In The Telegraph Schuurs praises the team spirit of the Dutch Juniors. He refers to a statement by former national coach Bert van Marwijk. “He said before the World Cup in 2010 that you don’t have to have the best players, but you have to be the best team. I agree. France is better individually, but we formed a much closer collective,” said Schuurs.
