National coach Frank de Boer confirmed at a press conference on Tuesday that he will allow the the Dutch squad to play against Scotland on Wednesday in a 5-3-2 formation. Former international Hedwiges Maduro immediately took the pen by the hand and shared two possible lineups on Twitter that the Netherlands could participate in at the European Championship. In one of the two line-ups, Frenkie de Jong has a role as a central defender.

De Boer has already hinted in recent weeks that he does not want to stick to just one system. With a view to the European Championship, the trainer wants his team to be able to play from different formations. De Boer chooses five defenders against Scotland and Marten de Roon has a base place, he already revealed during the press moment. While De Boer was still speaking, Maduro announced on Twitter how he would play if he were in charge.

If the opponent of the Dutch were to play with two strikers, he would opt for a 3-5-2 system. In the event that the opponent plays with only one striker, Maduro would opt for 4-2-3-1. Maduro’s eleven names are fixed: “My European Championship line-up: Stekelenburg, Dumfries, De Vrij, De Ligt, Wijndal, Frenkie de Jong, De Roon, Klaassen, Wijnaldum, Depay, and Weghorst,” said Maduro.

Maduro sees De Jong as an option for a place in the center. The the Dutch-international already played there at Ajax and was also placed in that position several times at Barcelona by Ronald Koeman last season. De Jong himself ‘would rather not’ play in the back. “But if the coach thinks it is much better for the team, I will play in the back, but rather not,” he told the team earlier this week. NOS.
