Surprisingly, Bundesliga fans have not chosen Robert Lewandowski as player of the season in Germany’s top football league. The Bayern Munich striker got all eyes on him with 41 goals and a record, but saw the honorary prize go to Erling Braut Haaland. Lewandowski was crowned all-time top scorer in one Bundesliga season with 41 hits last weekend. With that, Bayern striker Gerd Müller dethroned, who held the record for almost fifty years.

Haaland reports via Twitter that he has been voted player of the season in the Bundesliga by the fans. “It is an honor to have been named Player of the Season in the Bundesliga,” said the Borussia Dortmund striker. “An achievement that is not only mine, but for the entire Dortmund family. We won this prize together.” Haaland was responsible for two hits in the 3-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen last weekend during the final match day of the Bundesliga.

That same afternoon, Lewandowski crowned himself the record holder when it comes to the most number of goals in one Bundesliga season. The Polish attack leader needed one more goal to leave Müller behind and was alert to a rebound from Leroy Sané in the final minute of the match against FC Augsburg (5-2). This brought Lewandowski’s counter to 41 goals in just 29 league games on behalf of Bayern. Müller’s old record dates from the 1971/72 season.

Haaland also had an excellent season and managed to find the net 41 times in all competitions in 41 games. In the Bundesliga, the Norwegian was accurate 27 times in 28 games. The Dortmund attack leader thus played an important role in reaching the group stage of the Champions League, which it did not look forward to for Dortmund for a long time this season. Haaland finished third on the top scorers list behind Lewandowski (41 goals) and André Silva (28 goals) from Eintracht Frankfurt.
