The attacker is currently on a level with the German legend and can grab the record against FC Augsburg, but if it is up to Dietmar Hamann it will not come to that. The former Bayern player believes that Lewandowski would do well not to take action and to honor Müller with that.

Müller’s record, 40 goals in one Bundesliga season, was matched last weekend by Lewandowski, when he took 1-0 in the duel with SC Freiburg (2-2). Against Augsburg, Lewandowski gets the chance to sign number 41 and shoot himself in the German record books forever. “It would be a nice sign if Lewandowski said on Saturday: ‘I’m not playing, I’m staying away from the record,'” Hamann said in conversation with Sky90. “That would be a good sign for the world, for football, for the people and out of respect for Gerd Müller.”

Hamann, who himself wore the Bayern shirt 105 times and is a 59-time international of the German national team, counts on understanding from Lewandowski. “He should agree that Gerd Müller doesn’t deserve to lose his record,” Hamann continues. “Without Gerd Müller, Bayern would not be where it is today.
