Except for the battle at the bottom, the eyes will be mainly on Robert Lewandowski during the last round of play in the Bundesliga next Saturday. The Bayern Munich striker needs one more goal to break Gerd Müller’s record of 40 goals in one season. The attacker is currently on a level with the German legend and can grab the record against FC Augsburg, but if it is up to Dietmar Hamann it will not come to that. The former Bayern player believes that Lewandowski would do well not to take action and to honor Müller with that.

Müller’s record, 40 goals in one Bundesliga season, was matched last weekend by Lewandowski, when he took 1-0 in the duel with SC Freiburg (2-2). Against Augsburg, Lewandowski gets the chance to sign number 41 and shoot himself in the German record books forever. “It would be a nice sign if Lewandowski said on Saturday: ‘I’m not playing, I’m staying away from the record,'” Hamann said in conversation with Sky90. “That would be a good sign for the world, for football, for the people and out of respect for Gerd Müller.”

Dietmar Hamann believes that Robert Lewandowski should show respect for Gerd Müller.

Hamann, who himself wore the Bayern shirt 105 times and is a 59-time international of the German national team, counts on understanding from Lewandowski. “He should agree that Gerd Müller doesn’t deserve to lose his record,” Hamann continues. “Without Gerd Müller, Bayern would not be where it is today. How could you express more appreciation by renouncing that game or not letting him play?” Lewandowski already had the opportunity to grab the record against Freiburg, but missed two imposed chances. “I think a lot of people are relieved that Müller still has the record because of those misses,” said Hamann.

Hamann’s proposal received little support in the studio from Heribert Bruchhagen, former general manager of Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV, among others. “That’s not fair, is it?” Bruchhagen wonders aloud. “I understand your arguments, but there is so much pressure on this. This concerns so many interests. That is really asking too much. Even if Lewandowski takes the record, it cannot be compared to Müller’s performance. Not even Lewandowski, if he still scored 42 or 43 goals. ”
