FC Emmen has not been able to avert participation in the Kitchen Champion Play-offs. The team of Dick Lukkien was on Sunday with 0-4 too strong for the already relegated VVV-Venlo, but Willem II’s 2-1 victory over Fortuna Sittard means that the Emmenaren finish sixteenth in the Eredivisie: 30 to 31 points. RKC Waalwijk lost 3-0 to Feyenoord and also finished on 30 points, but had a better goal difference anyway: -22 to -28. FC Emmen therefore awaits a confrontation with NAC Breda next Thursday, which won 4-1 against FC Volendam on Saturday, and in the possible final NEC or Roda JC Kerkrade will be the opponent.

After a difficult opening phase, FC Emmen still had some opportunities to take the lead. However, these were not for Luka Adzic and Kerim Frei. Adzic encountered goalkeeper Thorsten Kirschbaum in a one-on-one situation and Frei also failed to open the score when he easily got rid of Arjan Swinkels. After 36 minutes it was still hit. After a wonderful attack on the right, Glenn Bijl found Frei via a nice heel, who in turn put the ball back to Adzic: 0-1.

Fortuna Sittard’s equalizer at Willem II was received with cheers by all fans of Emmen in the Netherlands and the joy was even greater when Lukkien’s team reached 0-2 a few minutes later. After a foul by goalkeeper Delano van Crooij on Michael de Leeuw, Sergio Peña went behind the ball and the Peruvian made no mistake from eleven meters.

Emmen then seemed on its way to a signed victory against the poor VVV, which will remember with melancholy the very last victory in the Eredivisie: a 4-1 victory over Vitesse on January 27. More than ten minutes after the 0-2, De Leeuw took the third goal from Drenthe: 0-3. A few minutes later, however, a downer followed: the news of Willem II’s 2-1 against Fortuna.

In any case, FC Emmen turned warm towards the play-offs, in case Willem II would no longer relinquish the game. Substitute Paul Gladon also scored his goal after good preliminary work from Nikolai Laursen: 0-4. That immediately meant the biggest victory of FC Emmen ever in the Eredivisie. Until Sunday, those were 3-0 victories at ADO Den Haag and VVV.
