Borussia Dortmund has secured qualification for the group stage of the Champions League on Sunday evening. With a 0-3 victory over FSV Mainz 05, the German top club ends in the first four in the Bundesliga anyway. For Mainz, a defeat ends a series of nine games without a defeat.

Dortmund, which won the DFB Pokal last Thursday at the expense of RB Leipzig, did not have much trouble with the number thirteen of the German league on Sunday. It took 23 minutes for the visitors to take the lead. After good preparatory work by Jadon Sancho on the left flank, it was Raphael Guerreiro who hit the far corner with a good shot. Even before half-time, the lead was doubled by Marco Reus. Again it was Sancho who was the declarant from the left. Dortmund captain Reus appeared in front of Mainz goalkeeper Finn Dahmen and shot from close range. With 45 minutes to play, the visitors were sitting on roses.

After the break, Mainz appeared dangerously in front of Dortmund’s goal a number of times, but Roman Bürki was alert and kept his goal clean. Time ticked away in favor of Dortmund, which managed to bring the margin to three ten minutes before time. Julian Brandt was only just on the field when he was served by Erling Braut Haaland. The substitute finished calmly: 0-3. Mainz did something back from eleven meters in the final phase. Thorgan Hazard made hands in the penalty area, which resulted in a penalty kick for the home team on the advice of the VAR. The Swede Robin Quaison determined the final score.

Dortmund comes through the victory on 61 points and climbs to third place. It is about VfL Wolfsburg, which will play against RB Leipzig on Sunday evening at 8.30 pm. With one game to go, Dortmund can no longer fall out of the top four and with one more game to go, it is certain of Champions League football next season. Next Friday, Dortmund will close the Bundesliga season with a home game against Bayer Leverkusen.
