Danny Makkelie will be in charge of the Classic next Sunday, the KNVB announced. It is the second time this season that the referee whistles the game between Feyenoord and Ajax, because earlier this season he was also appointed for the Classic in Amsterdam. Makkelie does not play after that in midweek round 33.

Ajax defeated Feyenoord earlier this season in the Johan Cruijff ArenA 1-0, by a goal from Ryan Gravenberch in the first half. Makkelie had a relatively quiet afternoon in Amsterdam, as he did not hand out any cards. The referee, who whistled the first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Chelsea last week and is also selected for the European Championship next summer, will now once again be in charge of De Klassieker.

In the same round of play, Edwin van de Graaf is in charge of AZ – Fortuna Sittard, while Dennis Higler whistles the duel between Willem II and PSV. The latter was then appointed midweek during round 33 for the game between Ajax and VVV-Venlo. Serdar Gözübüyük then whistles PEC Zwolle – PSV, Feyenoord will have to deal with Jeroen Manschot in the duel with Heracles Almelo and Allard Lindhout will take charge of FC Groningen – AZ. Makkelie does not play on the penultimate match day of the Eredivisie.
