André Onana responded via Twitter on Sunday afternoon to Ajax’s national title. The keeper was not allowed to be present at the festivities due to his doping suspension and was therefore the big absentee. He does sympathize with his teammates. “I would have liked to celebrate the title with all of you, but that will take a while. Big congratulations to the entire Ajax family and above all the supporters”, Onana writes.

“We are the champions! We did it again!”, The Cameroonian also tweeted. Onana kept twenty games in the Eredivisie this season, before he was suspended for a year. According to director of football affairs Marc Overmars, there is a good chance that Onana has already played his last match for Ajax. Prior to the championship match against FC Emmen, Overmars said that Ajax has “not for nothing” stopped the negotiations about a new contract. “I think there is a good chance that he will leave in the summer,” he told the NOS.

Onana has a contract until the summer of 2022 and will therefore have to be sold to avoid a transfer-free departure. Analyst Ronald de Boer of ESPN sees several Ajax players leave, including Onana. “Some players are also ready in principle. I think Onana is basically done with Ajax. That is not at all negative, the boy did a great job, but those are players who have come to reach the top.” According to ESPN Ajax had asked FIFA whether Onana could be present at the party by way of exception, but permission was not granted.
