Borussia Dortmund qualified for the final of the DFB Pokal on Saturday evening in a childishly simple way. The team of trainer Edin Terzic had no child at Holstein Kiel and had already reached the final score at half time: 5-0. A serious downer was Mateu Morey, who had to leave the field after a horror injury with a stretcher. Dortmund, which seized the German Cup for the last time in 2017, will meet RB Leipzig in the final on Thursday 13 May. The team of Julian Nagelsmann was too strong for Werder Bremen (1-2) in the injury time of the extension on Friday-evening.

Dortmund, which, apart from Erling Braut Haaland, took office at full strength, was rewarded early in the game for its attacking intentions. Jadon Sancho pulled in from the left, served Giovanni Reyna, and watched the latter hit the right corner with a dry bang from the turn. The same Reyna was five minutes later, halfway through the first half, after some fortune again at the end of a Dortmund attack. After the heels of both Marco Reus and Raphaël Guerreiro, it was a breeze for the midfielder to slide in for an empty goal.

Holstein tried, but had to see how the home team had everything in order organizationally and could easily take over several times. Two minutes after Reyna’s goal, it was Marco Reus who put himself on the scoreboard. The captain was found beautifully through the air by Emre Can and then simply pushed the ball behind goalkeeper Thomas Dähne. The scoring drive of the number five of the Bundesliga was not yet silenced, as Thorgan Hazard finished controlled in the first half after an unfortunate pass back from Jonas Meffert and Jude Bellingham took care of the final chord in the first half with a shot changed direction.

After the break, the game hardly changed and it was mainly Dortmund that hit the clock, without achieving life-sized chances. A serious disappointment was the failure of Morey, who was carried off the field fifteen minutes before time by stretcher after a horror injury. The defender stepped out and seemed to twist his knee in the process. Haaland could barely bear the images from the stands and, just like a number of teammates, covered his eyes. Dortmund was given opportunities to further expand the score in the remainder of the game via Mats Hummels and Bellingham, but did not succeed.
