Óscar Mingueza has extended his contract with Barcelona, the Catalans announce through official channels. The 21-year-old center-back had an expiring contract with Barcelona, but has signed for two years. Mingueza’s new contract, running until mid-2023, has been given a 100 million euros buyout clause.

Mingueza’s expiring contract included an option to extend the partnership for two years. Barcelona has activated that option, as a result of which the youth international of Spain has signed a contract that will run until mid-2023. The Barcelona-trained Mingueza has made his breakthrough in the main squad this season and has played 36 official games for the time being.

Coach Ronald Koeman had to call on Mingueza, partly due to personnel problems in the defense, who initially started the season in Barcelona B. The Dutch coach held on to him when Ronald Araújo and Gerard Piqué, among others, were fit again. Mingueza played a number of games as a right back, but has been used as center-back in Koeman’s three-man defense in recent weeks.
