FC Volendam turned the ‘Vissersderby’ against Telstar into a profit on Sunday afternoon. The team of trainer Wim Jonk took the lead after fifteen minutes, played with ten men in the final phase, and then managed to expand the margin through the sixteen-year-old debutant Lequincio Zeefuik. The youngster, the brother of Genero Zeefuik and Deyovaisio Zeefuik, determined the final score at 2-0. Volendam is seventh; Telstar can be found in thirteenth place in the Kitchen Champion Division.

Volendam, without the injured Francesco Antonucci, pulled a lot of leather in the opening phase. Telstar goalkeeper Jasper Schendelaar parried a bet by Ibrahim El Kadiri in the second minute and stopped a Derry John Murkin cannonball with his fist. Siebe Vandermeulen’s withdrawal in the tenth minute was a damper for Telstar, which brought in Redouan Taha as a replacement. Shortly afterwards, Volendam opened the score. Telstar suffered sloppy ball loss in the build-up, after which Volendam steamed up and the ball ended up with Marijn Kaars. Face to face with Schendelaar, he opted for the short angle.

Even after the goal, Volendam remained the parent party. The home team regularly appeared threateningly in front of Schendelaar’s goal, but before half-time it remained 1-0. After the break, a header from Murkin sailed over the goal, Samuele Mulattieri fell a toe-length short to double the margin and Calvin Twigt went wildly wide. The same Twigt took his second yellow card thirteen minutes before the end, after which Telstar smelled blood. Robin Eindhoven missed the ball in a favorable position and goalkeeper Nordin Bakker of Volendam saved the subsequent effort by Rashaan Fernandes. Eindhoven then encountered Bakker, after which debutant Zeefuik, who came in fifteen minutes before the end, determined the final score.

Before the match, Volendam came with a nice gesture towards Telstar. The club handed Telstar a shirt with number 63, a reference to the founding year of the provincial fellow, and with the name Marja. It was a statement of support for Marja Korbee, also known as ‘Miss Telstar’. The 59-year-old Korbee normally does not miss a game of the club and has been active as a volunteer at Telstar for 37 years: was a member of the supporters association and the anniversary committee, was a club archivist and took care of the club booklet. Earlier this month she was hospitalized after a major stroke. Telstar called on social media to all supporters to shower ‘their Marja’ with flowers and cards

Whoever says Telstar says Marja, and who says Marja, says Telstar. We are very shocked by the news that Marja …
