Galatasaray’s title aspirations have suffered a major blow. The number three of the Süper Lig should have won against Trabzonspor on Wednesday evening to approach leader Besiktas to four points, but drew 1-1. Galatasaray owed the point to a goal in the last minute of injury time. After the draw, Besiktas is six points behind, while number two Fenerbahçe is four points apart. Trabzonspor is fourth, with six points less than Galatasaray and one game more played. Ryan Babel participated for 82 minutes at Galatasaray.

Most danger came in the first half of Trabzonspor. Galatasaray’s goalkeeper Fernando Muslera turned shots from both Djaniny and Anastasios Bakasetas into the short corner, while a backward headbutt from Anthony Nwakaeme after Caleb Ekuban headed through a corner hit the post. Trabzonspor also got away well after 26 minutes. Edgar Ié received a yellow card when he stood on the heel of Emre Kilinc and the ex-defender of Feyenoord could not complain about that.

In the second half, Galatasaray showed itself more. After a cross from Kilinc, Babel headed the ball back to Emre Akbaba, who shot at close range against a defender from Trabzonspor. Then Babel approached for a free kick from an attractive position, but he shot quite high. A subsequent deployment by Akbaba, just outside the penalty area, was far from the direction. Yet it was Trabzonspor, the team that also all remitted the previous four matches, that opened the score thirteen minutes before the end.

Galatasaray was put with his back against the wall after a corner, was unable to defend the ball well and conceded a goal from Ié. The defender, who came up with him, got the ball in front of a header from defender Christian Luyindama of Galatasaray, took the ball and fired devastatingly from the edge of the penalty area into the top left corner. As goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir of Trabzonspor saved on a swipe by Kilinc, it seemed to stay at 0-1. Deep in stoppage time, however, Akbaba scored from close range after Cakir failed to save enough on Taylan Antalyali’s shot from a rehearsed free kick.
