Barcelona and Atlético Madrid will remain in the Super League for the time being, it reports COPE. The Spanish superpowers have decided this in an emergency meeting between the twelve organizing clubs of the competition. Manchester City have officially distanced themselves from the Super League, with Chelsea reportedly having serious doubts about their participation.

Earlier in the evening, persistent rumors emerged that Atlético Madrid wanted to leave the Super League, but they were later denied by the Spanish top club itself. Barcelona will remain active in the Super League for the time being, but his participation seems to be hanging by a thread. Joan Laporta, the president of Barça, announced on Tuesday that the socio’s of the club can vote on participation in the Super League: without a yes from the majority, Barcelona will not enter.

The likelihood that the members of Barça will vote to participate in the Super League seems small given the general trend among football fans towards the super league. Barcelona does not have to pay a termination fine if the socio’s vote against. Laporta has included a clause for this in the contract with the Super League.
