RB Leipzig suffered a painful defeat on Tuesday evening. The number two in the Bundesliga visited number seventeen 1. FC Köln 2-1 down by two goals from Jonas Hector. Leipzig is seven points behind Bayern Munich, which will visit Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday evening. On the other hand, Cologne is taking an important step in the battle for survival. The club is still in a place that results in direct relegation, but does make a thirteen-point gap with the number last Schalke 04, who can relegate on Tuesday evening.

Kingsley Ehizibue had a base at Cologne; Justin Kluivert came in at Leipzig halfway through the second half. The first half was devoid of goals, but had sixteen goal attempts: thirteen from Leizpig and three from Köln. Julian Nagelsmann’s team dominated the match, but failed to hurt Köln. Given the game image, the opening goal of the home team, in the first minute after the break, was surprising. Hector had a free header at the far post after a curving cross from Jannes-Kilian Horn from the left flank: 1-0.

With a devastating swipe, Amadou Haidara then scored the tying run. The midfielder was reached outside the penalty area by the steamy defender Marcel Halstenberg and hit the right corner. Less than two minutes later, however, Leipzig was again surprised by Cologne. After a long throw-in by Ehizibue, Hector combined with Ondrej Duda. Hector got the ball back through the heel of his teammate and found the right corner with a low shot. Leipzig brought in Kluivert, among others, but was unable to turn the game around.

Ehizibue did get a yellow card halfway through the first half after a foul on Christopher Nkunku, which means that he is suspended for Friday’s away game against FC Augsburg. It was his fifth yellow card of the season. The Dutchman was lucky that a tackle in the second half did not lead to his second print, after which he was taken to the side by trainer Friedhelm Funkel. Leipzig is on a par with Hertha BSC in terms of points, although the number sixteen has two matches.
