Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi is so angry about the Super League that he does not want to take action against AC Milan on Wednesday. The latter club, together with Juventus and Internazionale, is one of the three Italian superpowers that have committed themselves to the closed supercompetition. “I don’t want to play against Milan because they are part of these three clubs, but if Giovanni Carnevali (the general manager of Sassuolo, ed.) Forces me, I will of course go,” the coach told his club channel.

The news about the Super League hit Sassuolo, the number eight in Serie A, like a bomb. “I am so angry that I spoke to the boys about this for thirty minutes yesterday,” says De Zerbi. “Sometimes it’s right to quit, like we used to do at school. I’m angry because a coup was staged on Sunday. For football, this is the equivalent of a coup.”

“Football belongs to everyone and is meritocratic”, says De Zerbi. Meritocracy is a model of society in which the socio-economic position of each individual is based on his performance. The idea of the Super League runs counter to this, because smaller clubs with good performances cannot qualify for the competition, as is the case with the Champions League. “With Sunday’s statement, the Super League clubs have planted a flag in an area they have taken from others,” said De Zerbi.

“It’s all wrong, and I think it’s time to speak up,” the former midfielder continued. “I am so angry and it is something that goes beyond my salary or job. It is about the atmosphere of values, feelings and football rivalry and the history of Italian football.” The match between AC Milan and Sassuolo starts on Wednesday at 6.30 pm in the San Siro.
