Clarence Seedorf would like to see footballers who talk with their hands over their mouth punished in the future. The former top football player argues for more transparency on and around the football fields, so that racism can be noticed better. At a European Council online hearing on racism in the sports fields on Wednesday, Seedorf said on Wednesday that incidents that have occurred recently could be better combated in the future.

“There have been some incidents in recent weeks and months,” Seedorf is quoted as saying by the NOS. “These can be very easily combated by applying a number of rules.” Seedorf wondered what players have to hide when they talk to each other. “We are talking about sports. So why should I cover my mouth when I have to say something to my opponent? If it were up to me, it will now be forbidden to talk with one hand over his mouth on the field.”

“And if you do, there must be a sanction. A yellow card, because we have to avoid that kind of behavior,” concluded the former the Dutch international. A week and a half ago, on Sunday April 4, the match between Cádiz and Valencia (2-1) was halted, after Mouctar Diakhaby had indicated to his teammates that he had been treated racially. Juan Cala was the suspect, but competition organizer LaLiga could not determine that he was guilty of racist statements. A sound recording showed that someone used the term negro de mierda busy on the field.

Another high profile incident took place last month during the Europa League game between Rangers FC and Slavia Prague (0-2). Slavia defender Ondrej Kúdela walked with his hand over his mouth towards opponent Glen Kamara, after which a considerable exchange of words arose between the two players. Kamara made quite an emotional impression after that. A discussion soon followed on the sidelines between Steven Gerrard and Jindrich Trpisovsky, coaches of both teams. Despite the argument, the match was simply played out. Afterwards, Gerrard said that he believes Kamara ‘one hundred percent’ and that the incident should not be swept under the rug ‘by UEFA. Kamara said she was fucking monkey mentioned by Kúdela.
