Ajax confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that Maarten Stekelenburg, Perr Schuurs and Brian Brobbey will travel to Italy for the return match against AS Roma in the Europa League. The three were missing in the league match against RKC Waalwijk (0-1) on Sunday, but are now fit enough to contribute.

Wednesday morning it became clear that Stekelenburg would be traveling with us. After all, Ajax announced that the 38-year-old goalkeeper will join trainer Erik ten Hag on Wednesday evening from 6.45 p.m. at the press conference in the run-up to the return. The NOS reported that Stekelenburg is also fit enough to start in the starting eleven against his old club. The experienced closing post had to miss the last matches against sc Heerenveen (1-2 win), AS Roma (1-2 defeat) and RKC Waalwijk (0-1 win) due to a knee injury and was replaced by Kjell Scherpen.

In the run-up to the game against RKC on Sunday, Ten Hag expressed the hope that Stekelenburg would be fit for the return in Rome in time. “I did not take Maarten Stekelenburg (knee complaints), Brian Brobbey (ice bone) and Perr Schuurs (knee complaints) all three as a precaution. All three of them will train on Monday and Tuesday and I assume that I will have them on Thursday. It remains to be seen how they get through the training ”, he said The Telegraph from the mouth of Ten Hag. The trainer also stated that Stekelenburg was ‘on the right track’.

Ajax has to brush away a 1-2 defeat in the first leg from 9 p.m. on Thursday evening to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League. The players boarded the plane on Wednesday, according to photos that Ajax has published on social media.
