A major setback for Atlético Madrid in the decisive phase of the season in LaLiga. Top scorer Luis Suárez has suffered a muscle injury in the left leg during training and it is expected that the high-scoring attacker in Madrid will be out of circulation for a few weeks. The Atlético management does not want to reveal any further details about the seriousness of Suárez’s injury.

“Luis Suárez has indeed suffered a muscle injury in the left leg. We are waiting for further developments,” Atlético said on Wednesday afternoon in a medical update about Suárez, who underwent a test immediately after dropping out of the training. The list leader in Spain cannot yet say when the 34-year-old striker will return to the training field of Atlético. Various Spanish media now assume a recovery period of at least three weeks. In any case, Suárez misses the difficult away game against Real Betis on Sunday evening.

Perhaps Suárez will be fully fit again when Atlético takes on Barcelona on May 9, the number two in LaLiga who has come to one point from the leader from Madrid. The battle for the championship in Spain is therefore completely open again. The loss of the top scorer from Uruguay is another setback for trainer Diego Simeone. He also misses Moussa Dembélé. The Argentinian coach is expected to opt for an attacking duo consisting of Ángel Correa and João Félix in the coming period.

Suárez has been worth gold for Atlético all season, although the former Ajax player managed to score less in the past period. Despite this, the veteran has so far been involved in 19 of Atlético’s 51 league goals. He currently occupies the second place on the top scorers list in LaLiga with nineteen hits, together with Gerard Moreno (Villarreal). Lionel Messi leads the standings with 23 goals.
