On Sunday evening, Sevilla decided the city derby against Real Betis in LaLiga in its favor. Julen Lopetegui’s team was, more than two months after a 1-1 draw in the first mutual competition match, thanks to a direct hit by Youssef En-Nesyri with 1-0. With the victory, Sevilla solidifies fourth place against Real Sociedad and Betis, which had lost only one game in 2021 until Sunday: the visit from Barcelona (2-3). Luuk de Jong and Karim Rekik only participated in the last minutes.

Betis started the game with great intensity: Manuel Pellegrini’s team put Seville under pressure and appeared dangerously in front of Yassine Bounou’s penalty area. Both Borja Iglesias and Sergio Canales had the prospect of an opening goal, but the Moroccan goalkeeper was unavailable as so often this season. Sevilla, on the other hand, took advantage of one of the first opportunities to break open the score.

After 26 minutes of play, En-Nesyri controlled a long ball from Jesús Navas in an excellent way, he bypassed goalkeeper Joel Robles in the penalty area and almost at the level of the goal line he fired the ball into the goal: 1-0. After the break, the game went up and down in the hundredth Sevillan derby. Borja Iglesias was millimeters short to hit a pass at the far post and moments later he aimed straight into the hands of Bounou. On the other side of the field, Joel struggled with a shot from Lucas Ocampos and an En-Nesyri bet went over the green and white rival’s goal. Ivan Rakitic was very close to a goal after 68 minutes when his shot just went off the wrong side of the post. Not much later, Betis thought to come alongside via Juanmi, but the goal was rightly rejected due to offside. The game went back and forth until the last seconds and it remained exciting. The ball went just wide when Diego Carlos wanted to clear the ball and he hit Borja Iglesias. On the other hand, a bet by Nabil Fekir missed Bounou’s goal.
