A few years ago, Noni Madueke was surprised when he came to PSV by Steven Bergwijn, who has now left for Tottenham Hotspur. In an interview with it Eindhovens Dagblad Head of youth scouting Rini de Groot tells Wednesday about the first meeting between Madueke and Bergwijn, after the Englishman came over from the Tottenham Hotspur youth academy in the summer of 2018.

It was partly thanks to Bergwijn that Madueke decided to make the switch in 2018. The teenager could count on a warm welcome in Eindhoven. “What still comes to mind is that Steven Bergwijn gave him a shirt that day and you saw that it made a big impression on Noni,” says De de Groot in an extensive interview with the regional newspaper. Madueke saw live at work in 2017, when the English youth international took on peers from the Dutch. “Actually, upon that return, it soon became clear that Noni would be playing with us from the summer of 2018.”

The fact that Madueke decided to sign with PSV caused astonishment in his native country. “In England not everyone could believe that Noni was going to play for us, but it happened anyway,” De Groot continues. “For that reason alone it was a transfer from thousands. After that Noni was very focused within the program and only angry if he missed opportunities himself. He is busy with football in everything and his parents have helped him by even coming to live here temporarily. They also went for his career, with his sister attending international school for a while. ”

Madueke started at PSV in the Under-17 and then moved through the Under-19 and Young PSV to the A-selection, where he is developing rapidly. With a brilliant goal, he celebrated his return to PSV against Fortuna Sittard on Sunday (1-3 win). Madueke struggled with injuries for a long time and came into action against Fortuna for the first time since the end of January on behalf of the team of trainer Roger Schmidt.
