Björn Kuipers made a mistake during the first half of the game between Juventus and FC Porto, according to Johan Derksen in the studio of SBS. The Portuguese led 0-1 in Turin after the first half of the return in the eighth final of the Champions League, through a striking penalty kick from Sérgio Oliviera. Derksen questions Kuipers’ decision to put the ball on the dot and does not understand that the VAR did not intervene.

After nineteen minutes of play, the ball hit the spot after an alleged foul by Merih Demiral on Mehdi Taremi, who crawled in front of his opponent and went to the ground when the Juventus defender bumped into him. The VAR and AVAR, Pol van Boekel and Dennis Higler, decided not to intervene, allowing Oliviera to shoot the 0-1 from the penalty spot against the ropes.

“It was not a penalty kick and it is incomprehensible that Van Boekel and Higler Kuipers did not show up. This probably means the elimination of Juventus and the dismissal of the trainer. It just wasn’t a penalty ”, Derksen says. Fellow analyst Wim Kieft agrees. “That boy blocks a block and you automatically run into the leg. Kuipers waited a fraction and then pointed very firmly at the dot. Well, there are three Dutchmen and Kuipers will not correct them. ”

“It seems as if Kuipers is too big to correct,” Derksen continues. “You have to save him, because these images go all over Europe and Kuipers stands for monkey. I think those two are above all in solidarity with Kuipers. You can also whistle for a violation on the Juventus player. This is just a duel, you let it go. Not heavy enough for a penalty. ”

“They can also say: ‘Come and see what you think. Have a look again ‘”, says Kieft. Presenter Hélène Hendriks cites the debatable penalty kick that FC Utrecht last Friday in the game with RKC Waalwijk (1-2 victory) in injury time. Referee Sander van der Eijk admitted afterwards that the penalty kick was unjustified. Derksen: “I don’t think Kuipers will wear the fine cloth like that referee at RKC. That is not entirely his nature, because he thinks himself a very good referee. He is, but this was a mistake. ”

Just before the start of the second half, Hendriks mentions that Kuipers is not clear and obvious error made, as a result of which the VAR was not allowed to intervene under the rules of UEFA. By the way, Juventus came to 1-1 early in the second half via Federico Chiesa. Kuipers drew the second yellow card for Taremi with 55 minutes of play, for shooting the ball away.
