Atlético Madrid has responded via Twitter to Felipe’s much-discussed handball during the city derby against Real Madrid (1-1) on Sunday afternoon. The defender of Atlético got the ball unluckily on the stroke of half time, but referee Alejandro Hernández decided not to put the ball on the penalty spot, to the anger of the white part of Madrid. The derby would eventually end in a draw, which was met with cheers, especially in Barcelona.

The images clearly show that Felipe touched the ball with his arm, after Toni Kroos took a corner from the left five minutes before half time. However, Hernández found it insufficient for a penalty kick and decided, after studying the images on the advice of the VAR, to let play continue. “They even criticize the right decisions. Some are used to always having the wind at their back, ”Atlético wrote on the official club channel on Monday afternoon. The tweet was quickly liked by tens of thousands of people.

Luis Suárez had put Atlético ahead in the city derby after fifteen minutes of play by signing the 1-0 with the outside of the shoe. On the stroke of half time, the visitors then begged for a penalty kick. Hernández had not noticed the moment at first, but was called to the side by video referee José Luis González González. It was the first time this season that Hernández stuck to his original decision. The arbitrator has been called to the screen eleven times so far and has followed the advice of the video referee in the previous ten cases.

Felipe’s handball can be seen in the video below from minute 4:15.
