Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech, Donny van de Beek and Sergiño Dest have made wonderful transfers from Ajax to the European top over the past year and a half. André Onana also seemed destined to make a dream transfer to a beautiful club in Europe last summer, but the Cameroon international is still on the payroll of the Amsterdam club. However, there is no question of disappointment.

Onana is surprised when asked if he is disappointed that he has not yet gotten his dream transfer. “Why? I get to train at a beautiful club with great players and I enjoy every day ”, the goalkeeper assures The Telegraph. “I just have to be happy. Ajax is my second home. Even if I still play here next season, I will be a happy man. ”

Onana knows that good performances in the Champions League can still lead to a transfer. “The Champions League is not only important for me, but also for the city, the club, the fans and my fellow players,” he emphasizes in conversation with the newspaper. The goalkeeper, who came over from Barcelona for three tons in 2015, was less ‘a happy man’ in the summer months. He then did not want to serve his current contract, until mid-2022.

“Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy with Ajax and very grateful to the club,” said Onana in July, when he was linked to Chelsea. “It has been five wonderful years here. But now my time has come to take a step. We made that agreement last year. I don’t know yet what will happen, but my ambitions and the agreements are clear. ”

Partly due to the financial consequences of the corona crisis, it remained with cautious interest in Onana in the past transfer period. Football affairs director Marc Overmars Overmars offered the goalkeeper the opportunity in the summer to upgrade his contract until mid-2022 and to extend it by one year. At the time, however, Onana felt it was too early for a decision and it is now unclear whether his position has changed.
