Roger Schmidt does not have a good word for the performance of Bas Nijhuis in the competition match between Vitesse and PSV (2-1). The referee whistled for a penalty for PSV in the last minute of injury time, but withdrew that decision after consulting the video images. After the match, Schmidt became confused in a heated conversation with Nijhuis.

Nijhuis initially saw a penalty kick in a push from Eli Dasa towards Jorrit Hendrix and pointed to the spot. VAR However, Danny Makkelie intervened and called his colleague to the side to look at the images again. Nijhuis then came back to his decision and gave the ball to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer of Vitesse. For the camera of FOX Sports Schmidt admits that he is still upset about the turn of the moment. “He was five meters away. Only if it really is a one hundred percent wrong decision, he should withdraw the penalty,” says the trainer.

“This is not one hundred percent wrong,” continues Schmidt, who went to get redress from Nijhuis after the match. “I asked him if he knew the rules, but all he answered was if I wanted a yellow or a red card.” The coach also questions the decision not to reject Loïs Openda’s 2-1. The attacker scored nine minutes after the break on a cross from Maximilian Wittek. Although there seemed to be offside, according to the video referee, that was not the case.

“It’s just offside in this photo,” says Schmidt about a still image. Center-back Jordan Teze also thought there was an offside. After the game he looked at images on his phone and concluded that Openda was offside. “In the end they made the 2-1, which was actually an offside goal,” says Teze convinced, after which the reporter of FOX Sports points out to him that Mauro Junior has lifted the offside trap. “Not? Okay, that’s their thing. I watched it, it was an offside goal. The way I saw it on my phone was the upper body offside. But in the end the referee decides. ”

Teze also thinks that the withdrawal of the penalty is very debatable. “I was far from the situation, but I see that Jorrit wants to jump and cannot get into the air”, he reflects. “I thought: that’s a penalty.” The defender blames Nijhuis for stopping the game situation immediately. “Philipp (Max, ed.) Was behind it and could shoot freely, but he (Nijhuis) whistled it off. Well … Either you give a penalty, or you let him shoot and then whistle off, so you can watch afterwards. But now our scoring chance was gone and there was no penalty. When I saw him walk to the screen, I already knew he was going to blow him off. Our chance for the 2-2 was as good as expired ”, Teze sighs.
