FC Utrecht has finally been able to beat RKC Waalwijk again in the Eredivisie. After three consecutive losses, the team of John van den Brom managed to win 3-1 on Sunday-afternoon. Last season FC Utrecht was the only club in the Eredivisie to lose to the Brabant players twice. It is the first victory of the season for the Domstedelingen, while RKC still has zero points after three match days.

The first 25 minutes of FC Utrecht were pretty poor. Van den Brom’s team used too low a ball pace to be able to break open the match, as RKC had built a wall in front of Kostas Lamprou’s goal. It was only after half an hour of play that FC Utrecht really shot on target for the first time. After a good attack it was Django Warmerdam who aimed the leather in the side net.

FC Utrecht became somewhat stronger as the first half progressed and a few minutes before the break it deserved the opening goal. Mahi cashed in on a Warmerdam cross and thus signed for his first goal in Utrecht: 1-0. RKC, where Vitalie Damascan and Morad El Haddouti made their appearance after the break, got more out of its shell in the second half and that soon led to the 1-1.

It was Damascan who scored RKC’s first Eredivisie goal in 2020/21, although Maarten Paes apparently could have done more. A wonderful goal from Gyrano Kerk fifteen minutes before the end was the deciding factor. A subtle volley with the outside right was too powerful for Lamprou and that meant that the attacker scored with six of his last seven shots: 2-1. Five minutes before the end, Sander van de Streek won an aerial duel against Cyril Ngonge and he hit hard from a corner: 3-1.
